Very Successful 2019 CEMETS Summer Institute

This year, teams from eight countries – Benin, Chile, Costa Rica, Micronesia, Nepal, Serbia, and South Africa, plus US states (California, Colorado, Indiana, New York City, and Washington DC) – attended the CEMETS Summer Institute from June 26 – July 5 in Zurich. The goal of this education policy reform lab is to learn from a strong VET system, understand what makes some VET systems strong, and to work together on each team's plans to improve their own VET systems.

Teams from Benin, Chile, Costa Rica, Micronesia (FSM), Nepal, Serbia, South Africa, and the US states of California, Colorado, Indiana, from New York City, and Washington DC attended the 2019 CEMETS Summer Institute from June 26 – July 5 in Zurich. Participants spent 10 days together with CEMETS faculty visiting companies that train apprentices, learning how strong VET systems function, and working on their own plans for improving their own VET systems. Just as in previous editions, this year’s institute was intensive and collaborative. An important factor contributing to this was each team bringing a unique perspective that improved everyone’s experience.

In this year’s institute, we were again joined by PhD students from the Swiss Leading House’s course program on Economics of Education. These PhD students and our own from ETH worked with reform teams as sounding boards for ideas and on the CEMETS research project around reform implementation.

The 2019 Summer Institute contributed a fifth generation of graduates who can join the CEMETS Alumni Club, established in 2017. This network enables us to maintain stronger post-institute contact with participants and facilitate multiple research projects. We are eager to see how all of the 2019 teams progress in the short and long term!
